Computer, Wi-Fi and scam help in Milton Keynes

A plain-English guide to the problems we are called out for most, what causes them, and how to get them sorted in your own home — written by the team who answer the phone.

What we fix in a Milton Keynes home

Most calls we take are about the same handful of things: a laptop that has gone slow, a printer that has stopped talking to the laptop, an email account that keeps asking for a password, a phone that has run out of storage, or photos that only exist on one device and nowhere else.

We work in the home rather than over a counter, so the fix happens on the devices you actually use, on your own Wi-Fi, with your own accounts signed in. That matters more than it sounds: half of the problems people describe as “the internet is broken” turn out to be one device, one cable, or one account.

  • Slow or unreliable Wi-Fi, including dead spots in back bedrooms and extensions
  • New laptops, tablets and phones set up, updated and signed in properly
  • Printers, smart TVs, doorbells and other devices that have dropped off the network
  • Email that has stopped sending, receiving, or keeps asking for the password
  • Photos, documents and phone backups rescued and put somewhere they are safe

When the Wi-Fi drops in the back bedroom

A router in the hallway cupboard is the single most common cause of bad Wi-Fi in a Milton Keynes home, especially in houses with foil-backed insulation or a long kitchen extension. The signal has to travel through walls, and no amount of “boosting” the same box fixes that.

The reliable fix is usually a mesh system: two or three small units placed where the signal needs to be, all sharing one network name, so devices hand over between them without you doing anything. We check the layout of the house, test the speed in each room before and after, and set the mesh up so it keeps working when a unit is unplugged.

Scam emails, texts and phone calls

The scams doing the rounds locally are rarely clever — they are just frequent. A text about a missed parcel, a call from “your bank” about a suspicious payment, an email that looks like HMRC or a TV licence refund, or a message from a “relative” with a new number asking for money.

Two habits stop nearly all of them. First, never use the link or number in the message: open the app or ring the number on the back of your card instead. Second, slow down — every scam relies on you acting before you think.

Our plans include mobile anti-scam protection that screens calls and links before you answer or tap, plus internet security that blocks malicious sites on your devices. If something has already slipped through, contact us straight away: we can talk you through what to do and help you change the passwords that matter.

Devices for parents and grandparents

A great deal of our work is setting up a tablet or phone so it is genuinely easy to use: bigger text, a simplified home screen, only the apps that get used, and the family photos within one tap. We also set the safety defaults — two-factor codes for the important accounts, and a shared password vault so nobody is locked out when a device is replaced.

It is worth saying plainly: you do not need to understand any of it. We set it up, write down what we changed, and hand it over in plain English. If something goes wrong in a fortnight, that is covered too.

What it costs

If you want one job doing and nothing else, an Ad-Hoc Fix is £45 — either an engineer at your door or a remote session, whichever suits the problem. There is no tie-in and no subscription.

If you would rather stop thinking about it, the monthly plans start at £15 for HTH Home, which covers internet security for 10 devices, five secure email addresses, a password manager, 5GB of Home Backup, mobile anti-scam protection and two engineer callouts a year. HTH Family is £21.49 and adds 10GB of backup and the Kids Protect app with social media monitoring and website filtering.

Both plans include unlimited remote support, so a problem in a fortnight's time is a phone call rather than a bill.

We are based in Foxhunter Drive, Linford Wood, Milton Keynes (MK14 6GD) and work across Milton Keynes, Bletchley, Wolverton, Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, Olney, Woburn Sands, Broughton and Walnut Tree.
